What is BMI (Body Mass Index)?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple measurement method used to assess weight status, obtained by dividing a person's weight by the square of their height.

How to Calculate BMI?

Formula: BMI = Weight (kg) / Height² (m²)

Example: For someone weighing 70 kg and 1.75 m tall → 70 / (1.75 × 1.75) = 22.86

Limitations of BMI

Although BMI is a practical indicator, it has some important limitations:

  • It does not distinguish between muscle mass and fat mass (athletes may have a high BMI)
  • It may vary by age and gender
  • It does not measure fat distribution in the body
  • Different curves should be used for children
