What is BMI (Body Mass Index)?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple measurement method used to assess weight status, obtained by dividing a person's weight by the square of their height.
How to Calculate BMI?
Formula: BMI = Weight (kg) / Height² (m²)
Example: For someone weighing 70 kg and 1.75 m tall → 70 / (1.75 × 1.75) = 22.86
BMI Classification
| BMI Value | Category |
|---|---|
| Below 18.5 | Underweight |
| 18.5 – 24.9 | Normal (Healthy) |
| 25.0 – 29.9 | Overweight |
| 30.0 – 34.9 | Obese (Class 1) |
| 35.0 – 39.9 | Obese (Class 2) |
| 40.0 and above | Morbidly Obese (Class 3) |
Limitations of BMI
Although BMI is a practical indicator, it has some important limitations:
- It does not distinguish between muscle mass and fat mass (athletes may have a high BMI)
- It may vary by age and gender
- It does not measure fat distribution in the body
- Different curves should be used for children
