How Is a Course Grade Calculated?
In Turkish secondary schools, a course grade (ders notu) is the arithmetic mean of all written exam scores, project grades and class participation marks entered during the semester. Empty fields are excluded, so the more grades you enter the more precise the result.
Calculation Formula
Average = (Grade₁ + Grade₂ + … + Gradeₙ) / n
n = number of grades entered (empty fields excluded)
Example: 3 exams (80, 65, 72) and 1 project (90):
(80 + 65 + 72 + 90) / 4 = 307 / 4 = 76.75
Result: Good (70–84) → PASSED

Grade Groups
- Written Exams: Usually 2–4 exams per semester. They are the primary driver of the course grade.
- Project Assignments: Research, presentation or hands-on tasks. More important in non-exam subjects.
- Class Participation: In-class performance, oral contributions and activity grades. Sometimes called "performance grade" (performans puanı).
Tips to Improve Your Grade
- If you are close to the passing threshold (45), focus on performing well in remaining exams.
- Project and participation grades are high-impact, low-effort opportunities — don't overlook them.
- If a make-up exam (bütünleme) is available, use this tool to see what score you need to pass.
- Some schools weight groups differently; check with your teacher for the exact formula.
